FREQUENT LOCK PICKING PROBLEMS
AND HOW TO TACKLE THEM
In the real world, it hardly ever goes the way you expect it to go. If you've been in the Locksmith business for very long you know exactly what I mean, but for those of you who are new to the Industry and haven't had much experience out there . . . here's some tips that might save a headache or two.
PLUG IS STUCK 180-DEGREES OUT OF POSITION:
This can happen when you pick a lock and allow the plug to rotate half way 'round a full circle. Because there is no key in the keyway, there is an empty channel at the bottom of the plug that the top pins can fall into if the plug rotates 180-degrees from neutral. On most knobsets the plug cannot rotate this far, but with deadbolts it's quite common. Simply insert your pick at the bottom of the keyway (which is now at the 12 O'clock position), keeping it level. Push evenly upward with the pick to lift the top pins out of the plug while rotating with a tension wrench.
KEYWAY IS UPSIDE DOWN, HOW CAN I USE MY PICK GUN?
It is common to find locks installed upside down, especially Kwikset keyed knobs. If you want to use a pick gun, this can be awkward because all but the Brockhage BPG-15 pick gun are built to strike in an upward motion. You can stand on your head but this isn't practical and you're likely to loose all the change in your pockets. First, commit 5 minutes using the gun in its usual position, with the needle striking the bottom of the keyway (which is at the 12 position now). Sometimes there is enough energy transmitted to the pins to cause separation at the shear line. If this doesn't work, turn the gun upside down and hold it as level as possible while operating the trigger. You can use both hands if you hang a small weight on the end of your tension wrench, a trick I've used many many times. If you own a cut away lock, it is a good idea to practice with it in various positions, whether you use a pick gun or not.

WHAT MAKES AN EXCELLENT CUT AWAY PRACTICE LOCK?
To be a truly
effective training tool, a cut away Practice Lock must be precisely and
meticulously milled and then finished by hand to remove barbs, sharp edges,
and left over brass dust. There must be as much material removed from
the upper pin chamber as possible, just short of allowing the top pins and
top springs to escape, yet not so close to this extreme that the stresses
put to it through lock picking practice might enlarge the milled slots enough
to allow loss of parts.
Also, the slot at the shear line must be wide enough to be of use to the
student, but not so wide that bottom pins can escape when the plug is rotated
slightly to one side.
Even more important is the stock that is used. If the lock cylinder
is of poor quality, with a lot of 'slop' and not well machined, it will be
a waste of time to practice picking it. We use high quality lock cylinders
that closely approximate the tolerances found in such well known brands
as Schlage and Kwikset.
Take a look at our selection. We
recommend that every beginner purchase at least three Practice Locks --
a 3-pinned, 5-pinned and 5-pinned Cut Away version. Several of our complete Practice Kits contain
this assortment . . . for example the PikStation+Plus
kit, which happens to be our best selling Lock Picking Practice Kit.
